We just want to find out what’s going on right now, it’s not quite as interesting and what we realized was that because we were focusing so much on the internet as this enormous conversation as opposed to the internet as this huge library. That the people who were interested in the conversation were coming to us and they were addicted, they were using it all the time as long the service was running, we had some technical challenges along that front too. But the advertising model of just selling product ads wasn’t going to work.So then what we realized was that what we really were building was relationships with people who were creators. But even at its simplest, we were trying to help these publishers be able to not only learn more about who they were and where they sat in the top 100 and what have you but also how they could make money off of what they were doing. And we did it in a very automated way. So that went very very well for a while, so that was sort of the first pivot. And then what happened there was that as a programmatic I mean the whole world of internet advertising has changed over the last 5 to 6 years, I mean just enormously. Now I stepped away from Technorati from an active role in 2008 but I have been sitting on the board ever since the first day. So it’s been wonderful really to kind of just watch as how the older model of direct advertizing and building display ads and stuff like that, that model was really fading on everything except for the biggest and biggest of site, but there was still an enormous opportunity around this growing programmatic trend. And because we had so many deep relationships both with these publishers and with the demand sources we were able to see a lot in the market place that wasn’t being seen by other people. And so that then caused us to really go into a new technology world where it was less about search and now it was more about helping demand find supply and helping supply find demand. And that’s much less of a public woo-hoo kind of ‘make the world economic forum’ kind of headline but it’s actually a really re ally strong stable business. So we’ve been doing that now for a while and that has just been taking off like crazy. And so it’s really exciting to be a part of you think the company is going to be one thing when you are starting it and you’re running it and it is that for some time and then you realize but in order for it to be sustainable you really have to go where the revenue is and transitioning your team, transitioning your company without changing the core values that you believe in. Are there any other lessons that you would like to share with our readers?Dave: Hmmm, good question. There are so many things that we could be talking about.So I think one of the things that I have always found really interesting is organizational development. And I think that start upsâ€"whether it’s even inside of a bigger company or if it’s a brand new start-up that there are some real challenges that happen and having now building 6 companies and some of them have gotten 500 people or so. Some of them were still really small when we sold them but I have learned a few things about people and organizations. So I’ll share a little bit about some of the things that I have learnt, maybe this will apply to you maybe it won’t, I don’t know. So th e single biggest thing to be looking for is communications cost compared to revenue or shall we just say efficiency in overhead. Every single new person that you add, there is going to be some increase in communications overhead.The first one is literally when you from, it’s just me and I am just transferring between the two sides of my brain to now there is another person, we need to talk to each other. That’s a huge amount of communications overhead but you get nearly a doubling in productivity, it’s really worth it. When you go from 2-3 you’re actuallyâ€"not that much more communications cost but you are getting another increase by 66% in your productivity. And that tends to work until you get to somewhere around 8 or 10 people and there is this really obvious, very very natural place where it’s super highly efficient, you don’t really need a lot of meetings, everybody just sort of works together it’s very very tightly coupled. Yet productivity is still, significant ly increasing for every single new person that you add.Then you start to switch, there’s a phase that happens somewhere between 8-10 people and about 18-20 people where you have to start using some kind of departmentalization. You need to start saying, ‘Well, I am going to focus a little bit more in engineering, you’re a little bit more on marketing, you’re going to focus more on sales’, and you start to see these organizational elements pop up. But by no means is it formal, it’s still maybe you got the marketing guy but everybody talks to everybody, you are all in a big office space like this. But what you notice is that, a couple of decisions made just by two guys having pizza late at night could have repercussions on the rest of the company. So there is a communications overhead that has to happen. So now you have to start having all hands meeting and you have to, ‘Oh, let me bring you in on what the other parts of the company are doing’ and you want to have cross department or sort of executive staff meetings, these kinds of things. So these are what you want to watch out for.And then here’s the most interesting part, so when you get from somewhere around 20 people up to about to 60 is what I call the death zone. So what happens is, as soon as you start getting somewhere around the realm of the early 20s the overall productivity of a new employee is actually offset by the communications overhead. So even though you get some small increase there is so much communication overhead in general that it actually costs you more money to bring in that employee. So this is the classic mistake that a lot of young startups, and I know I’ve personally made is you are sort of at the 60th stage and you’re like, ‘We can just do one thing, but to do it really well, we need to do two things, let me hire five or six more people and we’ll get that second thing done’, never happens. What happens is you hire those 5 or 6 more people and it just adds more chaos. So at that point, this is actually important we’re having a really good CFO, we are having somebody who is a really good finance person, maybe that’s you the CEO but you really need to sit down and say, ‘Do I have enough revenues? This new person that I am bringing in, employee number 22, what’s the revenue impact that I am going to get from this person?’ If it’s more than their annual salary, hire them, if it’s not, don’t hire them and you’ve got to wait until you have enough of what you are doing to be able to grow. And that’s the only way that I found to get through that death zone. And it’s just a slog, every single new employee has to be justified by the additional amount of revenue that you are bringing in. And then you are literally paying for them.Now, once you get to 60, another magical thing happens, which is all of a sudden, you can start doing three or four things at once, you have a layer of middle management and process that just natu rally falls into place. And now all of a sudden, you get super efficient again. So from 60 to about 120, golden zone. You’re doing great because you are making enough money, your revenues are growing, they are predictable, you can start going back and saying toâ€"that’s actually where the spreadsheets really really matter. When you are at 15 or 20 people and you don’t where you revenue model is really, you kind of sort of do but you are not sure, all of those yearly projections they are all BS. When you get to 60, now you can start to forecast out a quarter or two quarters out and you’re like, ‘Wow, now I understand how to do some planning’. And that’s a fabulous time to be able to grow into new markets or grow, expand internationally.Now there is this next thing that happens at 120, so 120 is the Dunbar number. Have you ever heard of the Dunbar number?Martin: No, never.Dave: So he was a scientist, his first name slips my mind at the moment. But he basically studied, h e was an anthropologist studying tribes and what he found was that when tribes get to be about 120 people there is something in the human brain, I mean we’ve somehow found this out that actually you start believing that some of those people are no longer in your tribe.Martin: So they split somehow.Dave: Exactly and so they actually have civil wars, they’ll naturally start to split, they’ll have this dichotomy. And so in fact, in places like 3M, Good to great Jim Collins wrote about this, what 3M actually does is that as soon as you get to somewhere around 100, 110 people is they literally split the department into two 60 person departments, where again they are now at the golden size again and now they each do separate things. And that’s another one of those where I remember at Linux Care when we had grown beyond 120 people and I remember I was the co-founder of the company and I remember walking down our halls one day and people were like, ‘Hey Dave, how are you doing?’ and I remember looking at my co-founderâ€"Martin: Who is that?Dave: I’m like, ‘who is that?’Martin: Yes.Dave: Exactly and it’s like ‘Oh my God, they work here’, clearly, they have a badge, it says Linux Care and I don’t even know, I’ve never seen them before, I don’t know who they work for, I don’t know how they got hired. Machine Over Mind - Literature Essay Samples

The abstract notion of fulfillment is one that creates a never ending search. The issue that prevails is that it is intangible and therefore cannot be classified with the least bit of certainty. Society on the other hand, is run by the rule of mathematics, sciences and absolute answers. The intangibles are too philosophical and there are too many variables to account for, so in place of that the economic machine was created. American culture is driven by money, dependent upon success, and engulfed by tangible goods by which individuals can express their wealth to the rest of the world. Herman Melville explores this notion in â€Å"Bartleby, the Scrivener† as he criticizes the belief that financial success or an esteemed social status are synonymous with fulfillment. Melville uses the array of different characters to expose the internal struggles of society as it rages against the inner workings of the economic machine. The pressure to succeed and thrive in today’s world is one that can be overbearing for even the strongest of souls. Nippers, one of the clerks employed by the narrator, is a young man who is said to be the â€Å"victim of two evil powers – ambition and indigestion† (7). He constantly feels the urge to rise in the ranks of the legal world, yet this only strains his productivity and renders him unable to work in the mornings. Melville uses the term indigestion to represent uneasiness and anxiety that his dreams will never manifest into reality. Contrary to Nippers, Turkey is an elder fellow of 60 years-old who symbolizes the tendency to â€Å"burn out† after ambitions run dry. Each day Turkey shows up ready to work in the same meticulous manner he has in all the years prior. However, as soon as the clock hits noon he proves himself to be completely ineffective. Constant errors arise in his work in compliment to his irate outbursts. This is a result of not si mply a morning of work, but rather the culmination of tough working years with minimal salary. A once hopeful employee, full of ambition and glee, is now a bitter old man who is only reluctantly adding fuel to the machine. To add to this notion of burning out, Melville includes the character of Ginger Nut as a foil. Ginger Nut is merely 12 years-old, yet his father has already forced him to work in order to set him up for success. Earning only one dollar an hour, he does anything from cleaning to running errands for the law office. The sad reality is Ginger Nut does not know better, and from a young age is already beginning the process of running himself dry before he has even had the chance to develop his own unique passions. The pressure to succeed drives the characters to moral ruination. The split between the social pressure to succeed and moral pressure to do right is enough to buckle the narrator under the weight of social pressures. Charitable acts are a common theme that is strung out by the narrator to assure himself of his morally upright ways. The issue that arises for the narrator is these particular acts are not out of pure kindness, but rather to be deemed as kind by society. This clear distinction is proven by how the narrator immediately abandons Bartleby once he becomes the source of gossip among fellow Wall Street inhabitants. Upon Bartleby’s declaration that he will not be partaking in any more copying, the narrator notes that Bartleby â€Å"Not only disarmed me but unmanned me† (19). By unmanning the narrator, Bartleby has broken down his inner barriers. This creates a comfortable sensation within the narrator that he is obligated to care for Bartleby regardless of his eccentricities. This makes him feel like a grade A philanthropist as he should. Bartleby is causing no harm to anyone and even makes the kind remark saying he would â€Å"prefer not to quit you† (30). However, the allowance of Bartleby to remain on the premises is abruptly revoked when clients of the law firm begin to think of it as strange. The narrator’s social reputation is at stake and his acts prove that he values that over doing what is morally right. Although he mentions several times that we are all sons of Adam, that belief is pushed to the side when some begin to question his doings. The egotistical atmosphere of Wall Street has created a culture where doing the right thing is not always acceptable and has shifted the priorities to a place where being a prominent figure is more important than being thoughtful. This represents the cynical cycle of social interaction and eventually leads to Bartleby saying, â€Å"I know you, and I want nothing to say to you† (38). A world in which Wall Street’s critical perception of all is valued over a strong moral code is not sufficient. In fact, it will bleed into all facets of the working environment until utter despair sets in. The propensity to consume time with negligible tasks will create a sense of worthlessness. The concept of time is paradoxical in the sense that while it never ends, it is concurrently finite. Life’s clock will tick for eternity yet Melville uses the job of scriveners to show how easily this time can be wasted. Copying documents day in and day out for the duration of a career will damage anyone’s sense of self. If Turkey were to describe his life’s work to a jury, there would be a consensus that there is little to show for all his hard worked years. This in culmination with other short comings has made him feel inferior to others. When addressing the narrator, he uses the phrase â€Å"with submission† seven times throughout the text. Melville does this to strengthen his point that a minuscule job is simply just representative of the pointless acts that happen each and every day. Acts that add no value to life, but occur simply because there is a perception that they should be done. It is an ingenious criticism of how society manages to waste our finite time by mindlessly going through the motions rather than seeking out true happiness. The irony in how Bartleby is perceived versus what he is standing for is too much to ignore. For obvious reason, he is looked at as more or less of a charity case or someone who is mentally ill. However, putting his â€Å"eccentricities† aside, it is clear that he is the wisest of all. He understands how insignificant his tasks are and eventually comes to the conclusion that they are simply not worth doing. The narrator is befuddled by this notion as he still believes that his â€Å"most precious papers perfectly safe in his hands† (18). However, earning a mere four cents per every 100 words of copying is no where near the recognition needed to satisfy or fulfill an individual. For this very reason, Bartleby looks past what is thought to be normal and realizes he’d â€Å"prefer not † to do just about anything. The inability to reach a level of attainment renders an individual to do not much more than stare at a lifeless brick wall. A demoralizing end is in store for those who fail to discover a sense of purpose that is in alignment with society’s status quo. A false sense of acceptance and tolerance has never been more prevalent than it is today. All of the previous points conjoin under the belief that society has created a place where one’s purpose is predetermined and anyone who wishes to deviate from that will be shunned. Wall Street is the epitome of economic power and accomplishment. By making the choice to have Wall Street as the setting, Melville demonstrates that money certainly does not equal happiness. Bartleby is surrounded by success every day, yet it does not appear to be the least bit important to him. He feels alone in a crowded room as the narrator decides to â€Å"isolate Bartleby from my sight, though not remove him from my voice† (11). Money, popularity, or companionship did not give Bartleby a purpose in his life and for that reason he felt absolutely nothing. The machin e has brain washed society to the point where it is unable to accept anyone whose sole purpose is not to become wealthy or successful. Bartleby became just another example of how unforgiving the world can be as when the end came, he â€Å"preferred not to† take one more breath. Herman Melville depicts the erroneous nature of society to value money and power above all else. The economic machine fuels daily life further and further in the wrong direction by valuing physical objects over joy and fulfillment. No longer are people searching for what will produce happiness, but rather working themselves to death in attempt to make their wallets heavier. â€Å"Bartleby, the Scrivener† shows what will become of our generation if there is not a distinct shift in mindset over what is important in life. The characters within the plot so accurately depict the inner struggles of humankind to live life in the most outstanding manner. A harmonious heart filled with joy will always reign above the bank account filled with barren green paper.

Prehistoric Life During the Permian Period

The Permian period was, literally, a time of beginnings and endings. It was during the Permian that the strange therapsids, or mammal-like reptiles, first appeared--and a population of therapsids went on to spawn the very first mammals of the ensuing Triassic period. However, the end of the Permian witnessed the most severe mass extinction in the history of the planet, even worse than the one that doomed the dinosaurs tens of millions of years later. The Permian was the last period of the Paleozoic Era (542-250 million years ago), preceded by the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian and Carboniferous periods. Climate and Geography As during the preceding Carboniferous period, the climate of the Permian period was intimately linked with its geography. Most of the earths land mass remained locked up in the supercontinent of Pangea, with remote offshoots comprising present-day Siberia, Australia, and China. During the early Permian period, large portions of southern Pangea were covered by glaciers, but conditions warmed considerably by the beginning of the Triassic period, with the reappearance of vast rain forests at or near the equator. Ecosystems around the globe also became significantly drier, which spurred the evolution of new types of reptiles better adapted to cope with the arid climate. Terrestrial Life During the Permian Period Reptiles: The most important event of the Permian period was the rise of synapsid reptiles (an anatomical term denoting the appearance of a single hole in the skull, behind each eye). During the early Permian, these synapsids resembled crocodiles and even dinosaurs, as witness famous examples like Varanops and Dimetrodon. By the end of the Permian, a population of  synapsids had branched off into therapsids, or mammal-like reptiles; at the same time, the very first archosaurs appeared, diapsid reptiles characterized by the two holes in their skulls behind each eye. A quarter of a billion years ago, no one could have predicted that these archosaurs were destined to evolve into the very first dinosaurs of the Mesozoic Era, as well as pterosaurs and crocodiles!Amphibians: The increasingly dry conditions of the Permian period were not kind to prehistoric amphibians, which found themselves out-competed by more adaptable reptiles (which could venture further onto dry land to lay their to ugh-shelled eggs, whereas amphibians were constrained to living near bodies of water). Two of the most notable amphibians of the early Permian were the six-foot-long Eryops and the bizarre Diplocaulus, which looked like a tentacled boomerang.Insects: During the Permian period, conditions werent yet ripe for the explosion of insect forms seen during the ensuing Mesozoic Era. The most common insects were giant cockroaches, the tough exoskeletons of which gave these arthropods a selective advantage over other terrestrial invertebrates, as well as various types of dragonflies, which werent quite as impressive as their plus-sized forebears of the earlier Carboniferous period, like the foot-long Megalneura. Marine Life During the Permian Period The Permian period has yielded surprisingly few fossils of marine vertebrates; the best-attested genera are prehistoric sharks like Helicoprion and Xenacanthus and prehistoric fish like Acanthodes. (This doesnt mean the worlds oceans werent well-stocked with sharks and fish, but rather that the geologic conditions didnt lend themselves to the fossilization process.) Marine reptiles were extremely scarce, especially compared to their explosion in the ensuing Triassic period; one of the few identified examples is the mysterious Claudiosaurus. Plant Life During the Permian Period If youre not a paleobotanist, you may or may not be interested in the replacement of one weird variety of prehistoric plant  (the lycopods) by another weird variety of prehistoric plant (the glossopterids). Suffice it to say that the Permian witnessed the evolution of new varieties of seed plants, as well as the spread of ferns, conifers, and cycads (which were an essential source of food to the reptiles of the Mesozoic Era). The Permian-Triassic Extinction Everyone knows about the K/T Extinction Event that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, but the most severe mass extinction in earths history was the one that transpired at the end of the Permian period, which annihilated 70 percent of terrestrial genera and a whopping 95 percent of marine genera. No one knows exactly what caused the Permian-Triassic Extinction, though a series of massive volcanic eruptions resulting in a depletion of atmospheric oxygen is the most likely culprit. It was this great dying at the end of the Permian that opened up the earths ecosystems to new kinds of terrestrial and marine reptiles, and led, in turn, to the evolution of dinosaurs.

How Hip Hop Connects With Many Different Real World Problem

Chang writes in his book about how hip hop connects with many different real world problem going on politically and socially in many different places. He tells a story of a beaten and battered area of South Bronx. In this small area there was no law or order since many jobs were lost and most of what was left there were people of color from different parts of the world, including Puerto Rico and Jamaica. Due to the lack of protection Chang tells us that gangs were created as a means of protection from the junkies and other scavengers. Their way of dealing with things was very violent in nature, later on when more and more gangs started popping up they became territorial. They attacked other members who wore their â€Å"colors† on another gang’s turf. South Bronx became a very dangerous place full of nothing but youthful gangs and gang related violence. Socially it was the lack of jobs and other necessities that led to the creation of hip hop. There became a treaty of so rts, although its terms weren’t really discussed, but the gangs decided instead of focusing on violence and other things maybe they could focus on music to show the world their struggle. So all the different gangs started producing different strands of what we call hip hop. Each had different roots in it that all became mixed into a sort of melting pot. The four elements are DJing, B-boying, MCing, and graffiti. Richard Friedman s Seminal Work, Crime And Punishment Essay

Several themes emerge from the course Frontier Justice that match well with the major themes in Lawrence Friedman’s, seminal work, Crime and Punishment in American History. His main thesis is that judgements about crime and what to do about it come from a specific time and place. Part of his work addresses the history of criminal justice in which he calls, the history of power. He identifies the relationship between crime, criminal justice and American culture. When one looks at the frontier West and its dynamics, one can see how those in power bent and at times broke the law in order to achieve their aims. When granting franchises or licenses, the Company is selective and generally is not in the practice of franchising to passive investors. Under the conventional franchise arrangement, franchisees provide a portion of the capital required by initially investing in the equipment, signs, seating and de? cor of their restaurant businesses, and by reinvesting in the business over time. The Company owns the land and building or secures long-term leases for both Company-operated and conventional franchised restaurant sites. In certain circumstances, the Company participates in reinvestment for conventional franchised restaurants. Dead Poets Society, in author Tania Modleski’s eyes has taken on a manifestation larger than the author herself. This story is not what the author will have you believe, whereas the true story was hidden in the misconception of Modleski’s beliefs. The sexual content, homoerotic tensions, and antiauthoritarian behavior, seemed to come from the author’s wishful thinking as opposed to the reality of the film. In the film a homosexual theme could not be seen. When Mr. Keating came to the school to teach, he did not insist on being called oh captain my captain. That phrase was used only three times in the movie, once by Mr. Keating himself. Oh captain my captain was used by two separate young men as a show of admiration and respect for Mr. Keating. In contrast Modleski sees oh captain my captain as a â€Å"pious deference to male authority†(Modleski â€Å" Dead White Male Heterosexual Poets Society† 315) because the very authority the film pretends to be challenging. One character that just enrolled at the school and was somewhat of a loner, and misfit, and is expected to achieve great success as his brother did before him. He is an example of how some families push one child to be exactly like another i.e. his older brother. When he first comes in contact with Mr. Keating he could not speak openly in front of a crowd. This is evident when he decides not to write a poem that is to be read in front of the class the following day. When Mr. Keating calls upon him to read and he cannot, he uses the technique of spinning him around while spewing out poetic phrases. This seems to work because he belts out some poetry from within and Mr. Keating says to him â€Å"don’t you ever forget this†, knowing that the technique had worked. There is one character that committed suicide according to Modleski because his father would not let him play a fairy in a play. What this character was trying to show was that he had finally broken free of his father’s decisions on how, and what, he should do. He auditioned for a play and got the part all by himself, without his fathers approval. This was something that he wanted to do, and was good at it. When his father forbid him to pursue acting, even second to him being a doctor, this was all he could take. Him putting his fairy crown on the open window ledge, just before committing suicide, symbolized the freeing of the actor inside, like an offering to a higher being. The boys in Welton Boarding School share what all boys their age share while at school. There are no signs of homoerotic tensions present. There are signs of groups forming and friendships being made. When they decided to form the Dead Poets Society it was a normal male bonding experience. An all male boa rding school does not mean that they are all homosexuals who are crying out for recognition. The movie did not illustrate any homosexual tension between the boys at any time in the movie. When Mr. Keating told the boys to rip out he introduction of the book he was trying to illustrate that writing poetry was not like reading a recipe. Poetry was feeling what you are writing, and it was from the heart not the mind. It is one of the largest global retailers in the fashion industry. They buy large volumes so as to provide affordable prices to the consumers. Their expansion in the online market created a huge opportunity in emerging economies. They have lower sales in home-ware. Marketing Strategy- The marketing strategy followed by HM is a concept of responsible marketing. A process of identification, anticipation and satisfaction of consumer needs is followed (Sustainability.hm.com, 2015). Marketing Mix decisions Product- HM has a wide range of fashionable products including clothing; accessories like belts, hats, footwear, jewellery; lingerie; cosmetics; home dcor items like curtains, towels, bed linen and sportswear. The concept followed by them is every day low price product. Price- The prices offered by HM with a high quality of product is affordable and cheap. The company follows a cost-based orientation. They make bulk purchases so that the cost is cut down for the company as well as the consumers. Place- HM has stores located in famous shopping street or in a renowned departmental store. They have online portal where consumers can purchase through the internet. The company provides shipping all over the world which makes it convenient and accessible for the people. Promotion- The promotional initiatives taken by the company is in the direct market through magazine, blogs and advertising through famous world celebrities. The company also uses print and video advertisements along with online marketing to promote their website (Moradi, Aghaie and Hosseini, 2013). Implementation Control HM controls different departments by applying different cultures in the organization. The company pays fair and reasonable wage to employees. The staffs are trained under different divisions at IT, HR and organizational development. The company selects and recruits employees and aims at managing diversity. Application of Marketing Mix within Marketing Process- The marketing mix concept was appropriately allocated through customer orientation, profitability and integrated marketing efforts. The changing needs of the people are met with a combination of product and price. The long-term and short-term strategies boost revenue (Roman, 2011). Benefits and costs of marketing orientation Marketing orientation is different from marketing strategies in a way by concentrating on establishment of selling points for existing products than to tailor products. Benefits of marketing orientation The marketing orientation focuses or satisfying customers desires. HM identified growth and opportunity sector by market segmentation strategies. The products that are currently in demand, a research design may be developed to identify and develop it. A competitive edge is known by applying principles of business for new product. Long-term goals and objectives are focused upon, thereby developing loyal relationships. The expenditure on ineffective marketing and advertising is less (Ragatz, Handfield and Petersen, 2002). Costs of Marketing Orientation The main cost lies in the manpower to conduct market research. The employees may be required to conduct a field research to identify needs and wants of targeted market. The financial expense to carry out the research affects the profit margin negatively. The costs to differentiate products from one another as a competitive advantage are also a part of marketing orientation. Segmentation, Targeting And Positioning Contemporary changes within micro and macro environment Micro-environment factors consist of company, competitors, marketing intermediaries and suppliers measured by SWOT analysis (Pahl, 2015). Strength- HM is trendy and fashionable at low prices with the best quality. The customers can enjoy a wide range of products and designs at a lower price. Weakness- The consistent low prices of goods create ambiguity in customers minds. Many people have a perception that it is difficult to keep changing fashion with fast changing trends. Opportunity- The collaborations with famous designers is a big opportunity. This helps in building brand image and attracts attention of new customers. Threat- The competitors like Zara, Topshop, Forever 21 are huge players. One missed trend can cost a lot to the company. The macro-environmental factors do not have a direct influence, but has an impact on marketing decision. It is measured through PESTLE Analysis. Political Factors- Since the raw materials are outsourced from some countries, it implies with custom duties that affects marketing. Economic Factors- A lot of sales and bargain marketing efforts helped in drawing more customers. The recession period and shortage of labor affects market. Social Factors- HM strives to be responsible socially and addresses green issues affecting marketing. Technological Factors- Advancement in techniques of efficient production, costs of materials, quality of work and outsourcing decisions that can have improvements in production process affects marketing. Legal Forces- HM complies with the code of conduct, Swedish legislation and Labor Act. These laws and regulations affect marketing decisions. Environmental Factors- HM intends to save the environment by creating a greener environment with the help of waste reduction, using renewable resources and saving energy. Proposition of Segmentation criteria Segmentation or segregation of the market for HMs products can be done on the basis of- Geographic Segmentation- Cultures across the world are different. The company must strive to adapt to different culture and fashion trends. HM can mix cultures of different countries and create fashion trends. Demographic Segmentation- Products must be designed in a way that covers all age groups and income groups. The products must be segmented for children, men and women differently. The prices must be divided in a way that suits all income groups from mediocre to rich class. Psychographic Segmentation- The lifestyle, social class and personality variables must be considered under this parameter. The habits, self-concept and loyalty of customers must be taken into consideration. Behavioral Segmentation- The attitude and response of customer towards same kind of clothes or a single chain is not appreciated. Multi-branded approach must be followed. The products must give a positive and unique experience to customers (Wedel and Kamakura, 2000). Product targeting strategy for Footwear Product Chosen As a marketing manager for HM, I choose to boost sales of Footwear. Purpose of Plan HM has focused mainly on clothing in recent years. There is a need to establish and boost sales of footwear. HM is not a destination of footwear shopping yet. Product Description The footwear range for HM is stylish, sexy, affordable and trendy. There are a range of products available from stylish high heels to a regularly working middle class person. Situational Analysis A SWOT analysis is conducted to determine the current situation of HM footwear. The range of footwear in HM is vibrant and colorful. There are stylish and trendy collections, while subtle and fancy collections for all age groups and occasions. Marketing Strategies Undifferentiated or Mass marketing- Online marketing and creating editorial content can be used to raise awareness. This marketing technique helps in lowering the costs. Differentiated or segmentation marketing- Different segments like income groups, age groups and people with same behavior and lifestyle must be focused upon. The products may be marketed accordingly. Concentrated or niche marketing- An own PR team can be run who understands the depth of the products. A small group may be targeted to elaborate the excellence of the product. Micromarketing- Initiatives for individual marketing can be derived by letting customers build their own products. Internet can act as a catalyst for this marketing strategy . Buying situations affecting organizations marketing activities The two buying situations where buyers behavior affects organizations marketing activities are: Business to Consumer (B2C) The factors that stimulate the purchase of a particular product are culture, social influence, marketing mix and reference groups. The process is based upon psychological factors, perceptions and attitudes towards the product and physiological factors. The response to the product reveals attitudes and belief as well as buying practice and behaviors for the product. The need of the product is determined by Maslows hierarchy of needs by need recognition and evaluation of alternatives that leads to a buying decision (Strydom, 2004). Business to Business (B2B) The micro-environmental forces such as SWOT and macro-environmental forces such as PESTLE are used to determine to buying behavior of customers. This model helps in understanding how buyers respond to various marketing stimuli. The expected response is different that includes a choice in buying of product, services or quantity (Macintosh, 2007). New positioning of E-Commerce HM is one of the leading retailers in the world that must plan to expand its e-commerce strength. The current online presence is in 10 European countries. New websites must be launched in 8-10 more European countries rolling in Italy, China and Spain. A robust website should be developed so as to connect with web and mobile assets with the store. The product offering must be made broader with a large number of brands online with inclusion of body care and hair products along with apparel and accessories. Unique features must be added. Smartphones will be able to scan an item in store and order online with a desired color or size. Improvements on navigation should be made with extended product selection and higher quality images . Extended Marketing Mix Competitive Advantage for Apparel Brand Trust- The apparel industry for HM has strong brand awareness among people. They emphasize on responsible marketing and use natural resources responsibly. They conduct an ethical practice that has built loyalty and trust among customers (Azevedo, 2013). Human Capital- HM has collaborations with a large number of designers. They delegate responsibilities of different departments by segmenting the apparels for children, men and women. There is high level of identification of corporate culture. Financial and other assets- The brand holds a high value with thousands of stores across the country and world. The company employs 132,000 employees that contribute in making HM the second top retailer in the world. HM Distribution The products for HM are directly distributed to the clients in the market place. The joint venture strategies are utilized for distribution of apparels, cosmetics and clothes. The entry into Milan Fashion scene helped in finding market for low end retailers. (Finne and Sivonen, 2009) Outlets were opened at Gremacy, SoHo, Manhattan, West Nyack and few other areas. The brand further expanded in Chicago and other suburbs. These areas cover a lot of people because of which the distribution to customers becomes easier. Discrimination pricing is followed by the company (Arslan and Kachani, 2010). Promotional Activity As a marketing and communication manager, several promotional techniques may be implemented. On social media, blogs may be created writing about the products and service quality by the company. Outdoor advertising and direct market magazine can be used to promote products. The company can use video advertisements and print advertisements. E-marketing can be used to attain business objectives by keeping in touch with customers, vendors, stockholders, employees etc (Peng and Wang, 2006). Impact of Extended Marketing Mix People- People like to change themselves with trends and fashion. They love to shop for themselves and others. Majority of people shopping are women. This has a major impact on HM as it is fashion and Textile Company. There are over 132,000 employees, 180 designers and various celebrity guest designers. The employees are provided with training that helps in serving the customers better (Pahl and Mohring, 2008). Physical Evidence- HM magazine is physical evidence that provides details of products with its images and price. The interior dcor and furniture also acts as physical evidence that gives a positive feeling to the customers about the standard of the brand. The online website of HM also acts as physical evidence that boosts customers in shopping online with convenience. Process- With the onset of globalization, HM subcontracted its business to various outsources. The suppliers are mainly located in Europe and Asia. The communication and IT department for the company is also set in many countries. Marketing is affected by inbound logistics, outbound logistics and supply chain process. Place- The reach to customers in this segment can be focused by approaching on website. The stores may be opened in central areas as well as suburbs. Promotion- Mass marketing strategy can be followed to approach the whole demographic segment (Hennigs et al., 2013). Psychographic Segmentation Product- The products may be designed on the basis of attitudes, perceptions and behaviour of people. Price- Price differentiation strategy may be followed to have a competitive advantage over other brands like Zara. Place- The stores must be opened at places providing convenience to the customers. Online shopping experience must be enhanced (Lee, 2011). Promotion- Promotional techniques may be followed with niche marketing so that particular group of people with similar behaviours or attitudes can be addressed. Difference in marketing tactics Marketing tactics to business The marketing tactics for business depends upon external environment of the business. The business models depend on the political and economic environment accompanied by technological and legal environment. The environmental forces are put into action so as to have effective marketing (Jakada and Kuka, 2014). Marketing tactics to consumers The marketing tactics to consumers involves different segments of men, women and children. The products marketed are enormous in nature with respect to style, colours and price. HM follows responsible marketing when it comes to consumers. The marketing methods are influenced by culture, social norms, attitudes and beliefs. The marketing tactics depends on internal environment of the business (Odekerken-Schrder, De Wulf and Schumacher, 2003). Marketing difference between in domestic and international environment There is a difference in marketing the products of HM domestically and internationally. The global strategies focus on competition with other multinationals or other global firms. Marketing mix is adapted with the different markets in different countries. While entering a new market, demographic factors, economic growth and risks are taken into account. The company has a clear vision and strategy to succeed in the international market. The company expands internationally slowly by adapting to the cultures of country. Different products and prices are set depending on the country. The marketing effect on countries is variable. Promotional techniques are used in a way that has the maximum impact on peoples mind (Mo, 2015). Conclusion HM is the second largest fashion retailer in the world offering quality products at affordable prices. Various marketing mix is applied to develop products and services successful all over the world. The promotional strategies by collaborations with famous designers make the company achieve higher standards of business. The wide range of products available such as clothing, footwear, accessories, home ware and lingerie gives HM to expand its business further. Products are available at low prices without compromising on the quality. Marketing tactics applied for consumers is different that of business models. The marketing method in domestic country is different with that of international countries. Micro-environment and macro-environmental analysis clearly states that the business has strengths of high quality with vibrant range of products. The customers are loyal towards the company.
