HUM Assignment
He did not believe anyone could prove existence of God. Voltaire was envisioned in Pastille prison in 171 7 to 1718 because, he iterated persons whom he served. He was also envisioned in 1 726 in England for the same offense. In his novel he shows examples of how he did so. Attacking religious prejudices when they falsely accused persons. In a sense he teased religion because, he thought they were corrupt. He shows that religion would be better without a specific leader.Once in Loaded there was nothing wrong, everyone was excited. Although religion was still very much important, there was not a specific person to control the people. Everyone was an equal. Voltaire went through plenty of trials and tribulations during his journey, He name across so much hatred because of his beliefs. No matter how difficult or rough things seemed for him, something meaningful came from it. He was brought up around Christian beliefs and views, from ages ten until seventeen. He attended ââ¬Å"The Jesuit College go Louis Lee-Grandeeâ⬠. This is when he started to reject his Christian views. Unsure of his reasons, can only assume he believed is was unnatural. In the novel ââ¬Å"Candiedâ⬠there is a surprise ending. Voltaire learned how to be optimistic rather than a pessimist. He learned how to rationalize. He states ââ¬Å"tend to the small things that we can do well- thus keeping total pessimism at ay- and leave the world at large to keep on its incompetent, evil, and even horrific way. (Chapter 25, Pig 81 7) I believe he is saying try not to look at the negative all the time and be optimistic. One person can not change the world. Even though there are negative things seen everywhere, everyday. Look on the brighter side. I realized this in the ended of the story. I believed the author Was very successful at convincing me because, throughout the novel his image was portrayed, as someone who can careless about what persons think of him. He is stays stern to his views.

The Vampire Diaries: Dark Reunion Chapter Eight
From where Bonnie and Meredith sat in the car, they could just see Vickie's window. It would have been better to be closer, but then someone might have discovered them. Meredith poured the last of the coffee out of the thermos and drank it. Then she yawned. She caught herself guiltily and looked at Bonnie. ââ¬Å"You having trouble sleeping at night too?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. I can't imagine why,â⬠Meredith said. ââ¬Å"Do you think the guys are having a little talk?â⬠Meredith glanced at her quickly, obviously surprised, then smiled. Bonnie realized Meredith hadn't expected her to catch on. ââ¬Å"I hope so,â⬠Meredith said. ââ¬Å"It might do Matt some good.â⬠Bonnie nodded and relaxed back into the seat. Meredith's car had never seemed so comfortable before. When she looked at Meredith again, the dark-haired girl was asleep. Oh, great. Terrific. Bonnie stared into the dregs of her coffee mug, making a face. She didn't dare relax again; if they both fell asleep, it could be disastrous. She dug her nails into her palms and stared at Vickie's lighted window. When she found the image blurring and doubling on her, she knew something had to be done. Fresh air. That would help. Without bothering to be too quiet about it, she unlocked the door and pulled the handle up. The door clicked open, but Meredith went on breathing deeply. She must really be tired, Bonnie thought, getting out. She shut the door more gently, locking Meredith inside. It was only then that she realized she herself didn't have a key. Oh, well, she'd wake Meredith to let her back in. Meanwhile she'd go check on Vickie. Vickie was probably still awake. The sky was brooding and overcast, but the night was warm. Behind Vickie's house the black walnut trees stirred very faintly. Crickets sang, but their monotonous chirping only seemed like part of a larger silence. The scent of honeysuckle filled Bonnie's nostrils. She tapped on Vickie's window lightly with her fingernails, peering through the crack in the curtains. No answer. On the bed she could make out a lump of blankets with unkempt brown hair sticking out the top. Vickie was asleep too. As Bonnie stood there, the silence seemed to thicken around her. The crickets weren't singing anymore, and the trees were still. And yet it was as if she was straining to hear something she knew was there. None of her ordinary senses told her this. But her sixth sense, the one that sent chills up her arms and ice down her spine, the one that was newly awakened to the presence of Power, was certain. There wasâ⬠¦ somethingâ⬠¦ near. Somethingâ⬠¦ watching her. She turned slowly, afraid to make a sound. If she didn't make any noise, maybe whatever it was wouldn't get her. Maybe it wouldn't notice her. The silence had become deadly, menacing. It hummed in her ears with the beat of her own blood. And she couldn't help imagining what might come screaming out of it at any minute. Something with hot, moist hands, she thought, staring into the darkness of the backyard. Black on gray, black on black was all she could see. Every shape might be anything, and all the shadows seemed to be moving. Something with hot, sweaty hands and arms strong enough to crush her- The snap of a twig exploded through her like gunfire. She spun toward it, eyes and ears straining. But there was only darkness and silence. Fingers touched the back of her neck. Bonnie whirled again, almost falling, almost fainting. She was too frightened to scream. When she saw who it was, shock robbed all her senses and her muscles collapsed. She would have ended up in a heap on the ground if he hadn't caught her and held her straight. ââ¬Å"You look frightened,â⬠Damon said softly. Bonnie shook her head. She didn't have any voice yet. She thought she still might faint. But she tried to pull away just the same. He didn't tighten his grip, but he didn't let go. And struggling did about as much good as trying to break a brick wall with bare hands. She gave up and tried to calm her breathing. ââ¬Å"Are you frightened of me?â⬠Damon said. He smiled reprovingly, as if they shared a secret. ââ¬Å"You don't need to be.â⬠How had Elena managed to deal with this? But Elena hadn't, of course, Bonnie realized. Elena had succumbed to Damon in the end. Damon had won and had his way. He released one of her arms to trace, very lightly, the curve of her upper lip. ââ¬Å"I suppose I should go away,â⬠he said, ââ¬Å"and not scare you anymore. Is that what you want?â⬠Like a rabbit with a snake, Bonnie thought. This is how the rabbit feels. Only I don't suppose he'll kill me. I might just die on my own, though. She felt as if her legs might melt away at any minute, as if she might collapse. There was a warmth and a trembling inside her. Elena wouldn't like it, she thought, just as his lips touched hers. Yes, that was it. But the problem was, she didn't have the strength to say it. The warmth was growing, rushing out to all parts of her, from her fingertips to the soles of her feet. His lips were cool, like silk, but everything else was so warm. She didn't need to be afraid; she could just let go and float on this. Sweetness rushed through herâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"What the hell is going on?â⬠The voice broke the silence, broke the spell. Bonnie started and found herself able to turn her head. Matt was standing at the edge of the yard, his fists clenched, his eyes like chips of blue ice. Ice so cold it burned. ââ¬Å"Get away from her,â⬠Matt said. To Bonnie's surprise, the grip on her arms eased. She stepped back, straightening her blouse, a little breathless. Her mind was working again. ââ¬Å"It's okay,â⬠she said to Matt, her voice almost normal. ââ¬Å"I was just-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Go back to the car and stay there.â⬠Now wait a minute, thought Bonnie. She was glad Matt had come; the interruption had been very conveniently timed. But he was coming on a little heavy with the protective older brother bit. ââ¬Å"Look, Matt-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Go on,â⬠he said, still staring at Damon. Meredith wouldn't have let herself be ordered around this way. And Elena certainly wouldn't. Bonnie opened her mouth to tell Matt to go sit in the car himself when she suddenly realized something. This was the first time in months she'd seen Matt really care about anything. The light was back in those blue eyes-that cold flash of righteous anger that used to make even Tyler Smallwood back down. Matt was alive right now, and full of energy. He was himself again. Bonnie bit her lip. For a moment she struggled with her pride. Then she conquered it and lowered her eyes. ââ¬Å"Thanks for rescuing me,â⬠she murmured, and left the yard. Matt was so angry he didn't dare move closer to Damon for fear he might take a swing at him. And the chilling darkness in Damon's eyes told him that wouldn't be a very good idea. But Damon's voice was smooth, almost dispassionate. ââ¬Å"My taste for blood isn't just a whim, you know. It's a necessity you're interfering with here. I'm only doing what I have to.â⬠Contemptuously he said, ââ¬Å"Why don't you pick on somebody your own size, then?â⬠Damon smiled and the air went colder. ââ¬Å"Like you?â⬠Matt just stared at him. He could feel muscles clench in his jaw. After a moment he said tightly, ââ¬Å"You can try.â⬠ââ¬Å"I can do more than try, Matt.â⬠Damon took a single step toward him like a stalking panther. Involuntarily, Matt thought of jungle cats, of their powerful spring and their sharp, tearing teeth. He thought of what Tyler had looked like in the Quonset hut last year when Stefan was through with him. Red meat. Just red meat and blood. ââ¬Å"What was that history teacher's name?â⬠Damon was saying silkily. He seemed amused now, enjoying this. ââ¬Å"Mr. Tanner, wasn't it? I did more than try with him.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're a murderer.â⬠Damon nodded, unoffended, as if he'd just been introduced. ââ¬Å"Of course, he stuck a knife in me. I wasn't planning to drain him quite dry, but he annoyed me and I changed my mind. You're annoying me now, Matt.â⬠Matt had his knees locked to keep from running. It was more than the catlike stalking grace, it was more than those unearthly black eyes fastened on his. There was something inside Damon that whispered terror to the human brain. Some menace that spoke directly to Matt's blood, telling him to do anything to get away. But he wouldn't run. His conversation with Stefan was blurred in his mind right now, but he knew one thing from it. Even if he died here, he wouldn't run. ââ¬Å"Don't be stupid,â⬠Damon said, as if he'd heard every word of Matt's thoughts. ââ¬Å"You've never had blood taken from you by force, have you? It hurts, Matt. It hurts a lot.â⬠Elena, Matt remembered. That first time when she'd taken his blood he'd been scared, and the fear had been bad enough. But he'd been doing it of his own volition then. What would it be like when he was unwilling? I will not run. I will not look away. Aloud he said, still looking straight at Damon, ââ¬Å"If you're going to kill me, you'd better stop talking and do it. Because maybe you can make me die, but that's all you can make me do.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're even stupider than my brother,â⬠Damon said. With two steps he crossed the distance to Matt. He grabbed Matt by his T-shirt, one hand on either side of the throat. ââ¬Å"I guess I'll have to teach you the same way.â⬠Everything was frozen. Matt could smell his own fear, but he wouldn't move. He couldn't move now. Damon's teeth were a white glitter in the dark. Sharp as carving knives. Matt could almost feel the razor bite of them before they touched him. I will not surrender anything, he thought, and closed his eyes. The shove took him completely off balance. He stumbled and fell backward, his eyes flying open. Damon had let go and pushed him away. Expressionless, those black eyes looked down at him where he sat in the dirt. ââ¬Å"I'll try to put this in a way you can understand,â⬠Damon said. ââ¬Å"You don't want to mess with me, Matt. I am more dangerous than you can possibly imagine. Now get out of here. It's my watch.â⬠Silently, Matt got up. He rubbed at his shirt where Damon's hands had crumpled it. And then he left, but he didn't run and he didn't flinch from Damon's eyes. I won, he thought. I'm still alive, so I won. And there had been a kind of grim respect in those black eyes in the end. It made Matt wonder about some things. It really did. Bonnie and Meredith were sitting in the car when he got back. They both looked concerned. ââ¬Å"You were gone a long time,â⬠Bonnie said. ââ¬Å"Are you okay?â⬠Matt wished people would stop asking him that. ââ¬Å"I'm fine,â⬠he said, and then added, ââ¬Å"Really.â⬠After a moment's thought he decided there was something else he should say. ââ¬Å"Sorry if I yelled at you back there, Bonnie.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's all right,â⬠Bonnie said coolly. Then, thawing, she said, ââ¬Å"You really do look better, you know. More like your old self.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah?â⬠He rubbed at his crumpled T-shirt again, looking around. ââ¬Å"Well, tangling with vampires is obviously a great warm-up exercise.â⬠ââ¬Å"What'd you guys do? Lower your heads and run at each other from opposite sides of the yard?â⬠asked Meredith. ââ¬Å"Something like that. He says he's going to watch Vickie now.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you think we can trust him?â⬠Meredith said soberly. Matt considered. ââ¬Å"As a matter of fact, I do. It's weird, but I don't think he's going to hurt her. And if the killer comes along, I think he's in for a surprise. Damon's spoiling for a fight. We might as well go back to the library for Stefan.â⬠Stefan wasn't visible outside the library, but when the car had cruised up and down the street once or twice he materialized out of the darkness. He had a thick book with him. ââ¬Å"Breaking and entering and grand theft, library book,â⬠Meredith remarked. ââ¬Å"I wonder what you get for that these days?â⬠ââ¬Å"You mean you found it? You figured it out? Then you can tell us everything, like you promised,â⬠Bonnie said. ââ¬Å"Let's go to the boarding house.â⬠Stefan looked slightly surprised when he heard that Damon had turned up and stationed himself at Vickie's, but he made no comment. Matt didn't tell him exactly how Damon had turned up, and he noticed Bonnie didn't either. ââ¬Å"I'm almost positive about what's going on in Fell's Church. And I've got half the puzzle solved, anyway,â⬠Stefan said once they were all settled in his room in the boarding house attic. ââ¬Å"But there's only one way to prove it, and only one way to solve the other half. I need help, but it isn't something I'm going to ask lightly.â⬠He was looking at Bonnie and Meredith as he said it. They looked at each other, then back at him. ââ¬Å"This guy killed one of our friends,â⬠said Meredith. ââ¬Å"And he's driving another one crazy. If you need our help, you've got it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatever it takes,â⬠Bonnie added. ââ¬Å"It's something dangerous, isn't it?â⬠Matt demanded. He couldn't restrain himself. As if Bonnie hadn't been through enoughâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"It's dangerous, yes. But it's their fight too, you know.â⬠ââ¬Å"Darn right it is,â⬠said Bonnie. Meredith was obviously trying to repress a smile. Finally she had to turn away and grin. ââ¬Å"Matt's back,â⬠she said when Stefan asked her what the joke was. ââ¬Å"We missed you,â⬠added Bonnie. Matt couldn't understand why they were all smiling at him, and it made him feel hot and uncomfortable. He went over to stand by the window. ââ¬Å"It is dangerous; I won't try to kid you about that,â⬠Stefan said to the girls. ââ¬Å"But it's the only chance. The whole thing's a little complicated, and I'd better start at the beginning. We have to go back to the founding of Fell's Churchâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He talked on late into the night. Thursday, June 11, 7:00 a.m. Dear Diary, I couldn't write last night, because I got in too late. Mom was upset again. She'd have been hysterical if she'd known what I was actually doing. Hanging out with vampires and planning something that may get me killed. That may get us all killed. Stefan has a plan to trap the guy who murdered Sue. It reminds me of some of Elena's plans-and that's what worries me. They always sounded wonderful, but lots of the time they went wrong. Anyway, we're going to do it after graduation. We're all in on it except Damon, who'll be watching Vickie. It's strange, but we all trust him now. Even me. Despite what he did to me last night, I don't think he'll let Vickie get hurt. I haven't had any more dreams about Elena. I think if I do, I will go absolutely screaming berserk. Or never go to sleep again. I just can't take any more of that. All right. I'd better go. Hopefully, by Sunday we'll have the mystery solved and die killer caught. I trust Stefan. I just hope I can remember my part.

The Major Laws of Chemistry
Navigating the world of chemistry is much easier once you have an understanding of the fields basic laws. Here are brief summaries of the most important laws, the foundational concepts, and principles of chemistry: Avogadros LawEqual volumes of gases under identical temperature and pressure will contain equal numbers of particles (atoms, ions, molecules, electrons, etc.). Boyles LawAt a constant temperature, the volume of a confined gas is inversely proportional to the pressure to which the gas is subjected: PV k Charles LawAt a constant pressure, the volume of a confined gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature in Kelvin: V kT Combining VolumesRefer to Gay-Lussacs Law. Conservation of EnergyEnergy can neither be created nor destroyed; the energy of the universe is constant. This is the First Law of Thermodynamics. Conservation of MassMatter can neither be created nor destroyed, though it can be rearranged. Mass remains constant in an ordinary chemical change. This principle is also known as Conservation of Matter. Daltons LawThe pressure of a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the component gases. Definite CompositionA compound is composed of two or more elements chemically combined in a defined ratio by weight. Dulong-Petità LawMost metals require 6.2 calories of heat to raise the temperature of one gram-atomic mass of metal by one degree Celsius. Faradays LawThe weight of any element liberated during electrolysis is proportional to the quantity of electricity passing through the cell and also to the equivalent weight of the element. First Law of ThermodynamicsThe total energy of the universe is constant and can neither be created nor destroyed. This law is also known as Conservation of Energy. Gay-Lussacs LawThe ratio between the combining volumes of gases and the product (if gaseous) can be expressed in small whole numbers. Grahams LawThe rate of diffusion or effusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its molecular mass. Henrys LawThe solubility of a gas (unless it is highly soluble) is directly proportional to the pressure applied to the gas. Ideal Gas LawThe state of an ideal gas is determined by its pressure, volume, and temperature according to the equation: PV nRT where P is the absolute pressure, V is the volume of the vessel, n is the number of moles of gas, R is the ideal gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature in Kelvin. Multiple ProportionsWhen elements combine, they do so in the ratio of small whole numbers. The mass of one element combines with theà fixed mass of another element according to certain ratios. Periodic LawThe chemical properties of the elements vary periodically according to their atomic numbers. Second Law of ThermodynamicsEntropy increases over time. Another way of stating this law is to say that heat cannot flow, on its own, from an area of cold to an area of hot.

Learn About the Tarantulas Family Theraphosidae
Tarantulas look big and scary, but theyre actually rather docile and virtually harmless to people. Members of the family Theraphosidae exhibit some interesting behaviors and share certain traits. Description Chances are, you would recognize a tarantula if you came across one, without knowing much at all about the traits that define it as a member of the family Theraphosidae. People recognize tarantulas by their enormous size, relative to other spiders, and by their conspicuously hairy bodies and legs. But theres more to a tarantula than hair and heft. Tarantulas are mygalomorphs, along with their close cousins the trapdoor spiders, the purse-web spiders, and the folding-door spiders. Mygalomorphic ââ¬â¹spiders have two pairs of book lungs, and large chelicerae bearing parallel fangs that move up and down (rather than sideways, as they do in araneomorphic spiders). Tarantulas also have two claws on each foot. See this diagram of the parts of a tarantula for more information about the tarantula body. Most tarantulas live in burrows, with some species modifying existing crevices or burrows to their liking, and others constructing their homes from scratch. Some arboreal species climb off the ground, living in trees or even on cliffsides. Classification Kingdom ââ¬â AnimaliaPhylum ââ¬â ArthropodaClass ââ¬â ArachnidaOrder ââ¬â AraneaeInfraorder - MygalomorphaeFamily - Theraphosidae Diet Tarantulas are generalist predators. Most hunt passively, by simply lying in wait near their burrows until something wanders within reach. Tarantulas will eat anything small enough to catch and consume: arthropods, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and even small mammals. In fact, theyll even eat other tarantulas given the opportunity. Theres an old joke that tarantula keepers tell to illustrate this point: Q: What do you get when you put two small tarantulas in a terrarium?A: One big tarantula. Life Cycle Tarantulas engage in sexual reproduction, although the male transfers his sperm indirectly. When hes ready to mate, the male tarantula constructs a silken sperm web and deposits his sperm there. He then sucks the sperm back up with his pedipalps, filling special sperm storage organs. Only then is he ready to find a mate. A male tarantula will travel at night in search of a receptive female. In many tarantula species, the male and female engage in courtship rituals before mating. They may dance or drum or quiver to prove their worth to one another. When the female appears willing, the male approaches and inserts his pedipalps into her genital opening, and releases his sperm. He then quickly retreats to avoid being eaten. Female tarantulas usually wrap her eggs in silk, creating a protective egg sac which she may suspend in her burrow or move as environmental conditions change. In most tarantula species, the young emerge from the egg sac as bald, immobile postembryo, which require a few more weeks to darken and molt into their first instar stage. Tarantulas are long-lived, and typically take years to reach sexual maturity. Female tarantulas can live twenty years or more, while the malesà life expectancy is closer to seven years. Special Behaviors and Defenses Although people often fear tarantulas, these big, hairy spiders are actually quite harmless. They arent likely to bite unless mishandled, and their venom isnt all that potent if they do. Tarantulas do, however, defend themselves if threatened. If they sense danger, many tarantulas will rear up on their hind legs, and extend their front legs and palpi in a kind of put up your dukes posture. Although they dont possess the means to inflict much damage on their attackers, this threatening posture is often enough to spook a potential predator. New World tarantulas employ a surprising defensive behavior ââ¬â they fling urticating hairs plucked from their abdomens at the offenders face. These fine fibers can irritate the eyes and respiratory passages of predators, stopping them in their tracks. Even tarantula keepers need to be cautious when handling pet tarantulas. One tarantula owner in the UK was surprised when his eye doctor told him he had dozens of tiny hairs lodged in his eyeballs, and they were the cause of his discomfort and light sensitivity. Range and Distribution Tarantulas live in terrestrial habitats throughout the world, on every continent except Antarctica. Worldwide, about 900 species of tarantulas occur. Just 57 tarantula species inhabit the southwestern U.S. (according to Borror and DeLongs Introduction to the Study of Insects, 7th edition). Sources Bugs Rule! The Black Cat free essay sample
The man I married was tender at heart and was particularly fond of animals. When he was a child, he was pampered with many different pets, and was at his happiest when feeding and taking care of them. However, his affection for animals grew as he got older and I noticed it. We acquired birds, gold fish, a nice dog, rabbits, a small monkey, and a cat named Pluto. Pluto was a beautiful, large, black cat and was my husbandââ¬â¢s favorite pet and playmate. He would follow his only caretaker around the house and would even follow him out into the streets if he was allowed. Their friendship had last a few years, until he unfortunately became an alcoholic. Day by day, he grew more moody, irritable, and more regardless of others feelings. He began using vulgar language towards me and even started mistreating me. He even neglected his beloved pets when they got in his way. Nevertheless, eventually poor Pluto also began to feel his wrath. In the middle of one night, I had awoken and made my way out of our bedroom after noticing that my husband was still not home. I looked out the front window and saw him walking unsteadily in the direction of the house and our black cat making his way towards the drunken man. Suddenly, I witnessed him violently snatching Pluto and the frightened cat accidently biting his hand. In horror, I watched as my once-loving husband became possessed by anger. With malice showing in his eyes, he grabbed the unfortunate pet by the throat and pulled out his pocket knife. My hand rose to my mouth in fear and I gasped as the ill-fated cat had one of his eyes cut from his socket. With tears threatening to spill down my face, I hurriedly made my way back to the bedroom and feigned sleep. The last thing I wanted was to experience the other side of my husbandââ¬â¢s rage. My thoughts prevented me from real sleep as I thought about how much the man that is currently unconscious on the couch has changed, considering everything that is now on his conscience. As expected, the cat slowly healed, but now the creature was petrified when my husband went anywhere near him. One morning, while making my way home rom the market, I noticed something hanging from the tree in front of our home. As I got closer, realization struck me and the groceries dropped out of my hands and on to the dirt path. There was Pluto hanging from a noose from a branch on the tree. I was frozen for what seemed to be hours, but were merely minutes, before I gathered myself and made my way into my house. Terrified by the cold blooded murder my husband committed, I decided not to say a word to him about anything. That very same night, I was awoken by my husband and looked around to find a fire blazing in every direction. As we were struggling to get out of our room, I saw a small black figure in the corner of my eye, later concluding that it was our precious cat that was thrown through the window by someone attempting to wake us. With much difficulty, my husband and I, along with our servant, escaped the flaming house, which would soon be in ruins. One day, as I was preparing dinner, my husband came home with a content face. That is when I noticed the large black cat purring and rubbing against his legs. My mood suddenly uplifted and I bent down to pet and caress it. This new pet automatically made itself at home, and it greatly reminded me of Pluto. It was almost as big as him and closely resembled him, except for a patch of white nearly covering its entire breast. Unfortunately, like Pluto, it also was deprived of an eye, and that made me fonder of it. It was very affectionate of my husband, and it seemed to bring back a bit of happiness into the household. The beautiful cat followed the same habits as Pluto had, including following its founder around. However, after a while I noticed my husband growing annoyed by it yet again. He tried his best to avoid it at all costs so he would not get the chance to strike and abuse it. My husband seemed to be somewhat frightened by the creature every time it would approach him and even when it would simply show love. After a while, he became very cold-hearted and forlorn, but I just remained quiet and patient. The old building in which we were forced to inhabit in replacement of our home had a cellar under it. This cellar contained coal and other questionable junk from past residents. One day, after my husband realized that we had run out of coal, I accompanied him down to the creepy room. As we made our way down, I noticed that the cat had followed us and swooped down to pet it before continuing behind my husband. Unfortunately, I did not notice the cat making its way past me and towards the man. Suddenly, the poor creature got in the way of the husbandââ¬â¢s feet, almost throwing him headlong. The enraged man picked up an axe, but before he could do anything he would regret, I stopped his arm to thwart him from swinging towards the cat. Only after looking in his eyes, which were full of contempt and malice, did I realize my mistake. Everything slowed down as I saw a flash of the axe making its way towards me and finally coming in contact with my skull, making everything go dark.

The Facts of Life Essay Example
The Facts of Life Essay Running Head: THE FACTS OF LIFE. Love, Marriage, Children, Ectâ⬠¦ Amanda Seigley Harford Community College Abstract Being a little older now, a freshman in college, I knew that soon I will be facing the marriage/family lifestyle before I know it. I wanted to prepare myself for what was coming in my future so I had a better understanding of what goes on. During this course, while reading the text, I was analyzing myself on how I related by doing the many scales, inventories and discussions within the class. I was able to find out that being married was not that easy. There are so many things to take into account before getting married, such as culture, different views and the different roles that will be played throughout the whole marriage. I think I can say that from taking this course I have been looked marriage and having a family in a new perspective than I had done before. I know I donââ¬â¢t want to rush into anything and let everything take its own course, but I canââ¬â¢t wait to have a family of my own. The Beginning of It All Marriage has many hidden aspects behind just the exchanging of vows. You have definitions of, frameworks, many concepts and gender role socialization. Marriage and the Family The definition of a marriage is a legal relationship that binds a man and a woman together for reproduction and the subsequent care and socialization of children (Knox Schacht, 2008). I have never been married but I have got the chance to watch my parents have a successful one. I believe that my parents are the definition of a marriage and I think they have done a fine job raising my sister, my brother and I. The definition of a family is a group of two or more persons related by blood, marriage or adoption. There are many types of families but I think the one that best fits my family is the modern family type. My mom and my dad both have worked full time since theyââ¬â¢ve been married, and have been able to support their family in doing so. Some people may say that having two parents who work will experience a loss of support, love and may cause delinquent behavior. I donââ¬â¢t believe that is the case at all in my family. My siblings and I both have gotten all the love and attention we needed, and we were brought up in a good family environment. Frameworks There are four different frameworks to describe marriage and the family. They are theoretical, social exchange, family life course development, and structural function framework. Based on the definitions of these I believe that my family was built off the theoretical framework, as well as most of the families in the world, and that I am the result of social exchange framework. Gender Role Socialization Gender roles are the social norms that we are expected to do by society as in male and female behavior. This gets into further detail when you talk about gender role socialization. From society we learn almost everything we know, from attitudes, values, beliefs and behaviors and we adapt to what weââ¬â¢re supposed to do. Such as women can come off moody, easily embarrassed and men are competitive, sarcastic and sexual (Knox Schacht, 2008). There are many positive and negative things that are included in these social norms for both males and females. I myself fit into some of these categories for the negative such as, negative body image and for the positive keeping relationships on track. Iââ¬â¢m like every other girl who watches T. V. and see the skinny actresses and wishes, ââ¬Å"Man I wish I could have a body like thatâ⬠, but I know that Iââ¬â¢m not the only one out there that does that. From my experience with men and my current boyfriend I can pinpoint the most common negative and positive norms. For the negative it would have to be limited expression of emotions and fear of intimacy, and for the positive initiating a relationship and greater available pool of potential partners (Knox Schacht, 2008). The men are more likely to ask a woman out then a woman ask the man out, and every girl has probably noticed the amount of women one guy has been with, because lets face it, their easier at it then we are. I did the relationship involvement scale, which I found out that I am very involved in my relationship now. Thatââ¬â¢s one of the social norms for a woman is the level youââ¬â¢re involved and I think Iââ¬â¢m doing a good job of following those social norms. Half Way There Dating and Cohabitation To some people love is a wonderful thing, to others they hate it, but to me, Iââ¬â¢m in the middle. Love and every other emotion consist of three parts: a behavior/and or action, a thought and a reaction such as a heart beating faster when that special person is around. Men and women both have different views and thoughts on love. But before you get to love, dating comes first. I havenââ¬â¢t yet been able to live with any of my boyfriends but I have had over night stays and week long trips. I feel as though cohabitating should wait until the engagement or even later. You learn so much from a person by living with them, that I donââ¬â¢t really like the idea of waiting until marriage to live with someone. I have dated my fair share of men, and I feel as though ever women does, is that their all the same. I did the relationship dynamic scale and got a 12, which is the highest which gives me the green light towards a good relationship. Right now Iââ¬â¢m in a wonderful relationship with my boyfriend of almost 2 years, and I hope many more years to come. Our love style is more Eros, and weââ¬â¢re in the romantic stage, right now. Jealously gets a hold of me sometimes but its normal, I think. The love attitudes scale showed I was more realistic then romantic when it came to love, which I think is correct. I want things to be more on the real side so Iââ¬â¢m never left wondering. Mating Mating may sound like something animals do, but humans do it also, in a different way. We tend to select out mate based on intelligence, education, and background. Selecting a mate then may lead to alternative life styles, such as, staying single, being a single parent by choice, and also having a mate of the same sex. The involved coupleââ¬â¢s inventory was a good way for me and my partner to look at what we have to offer each other. We compared the same questions that were important to use to see how weââ¬â¢re a like. I enjoyed spending this time just learning about him, and seeing why I chose him. It came down to us being on the same level with marriage, family, and careers. Multiculturalism I and my partner come from different backgrounds, which is the result of multiculturalism. This plays a huge role in almost everyoneââ¬â¢s life. Multiculturalism is something that consists of many cultures in society. My background includes, Polish, Irish, Indian and German, so Iââ¬â¢m a mix of a little bit of everything. Since my dad is almost full Polish and my momââ¬â¢s a mix of the others they were both brought up different based on their cultures. Now my partner is a mix of some other different things such as German, Italian, and a few others. The way he was raised is completely different from the way I was raised, but weââ¬â¢re learning to get a long well. We both have different views on the way to raise children and to have careers. This happens in almost every relationship and all you have to do is communicate with one another and compromise. Communication Communication is the key to success. From doing the Supportive Communication Scale and relating it to my relationship, I found out that I and my partner have good communication. We take time everyday to sit down with out the T. V. on or anything distracting us and just talk about anything and everything. When we get into arguments that a different story. We both try to avoid each other to get away from the situation, which hurts or relationship. Communication also plays a big role in sexuality, especially non-verbal communication. Each gender looks at sexuality in a different perspective. Children and Parenting Blended Families Talking about sexuality leads to the next topic on children, parenting, and blended families. There are many factors that go into how to raise a child. Such as, the wiring of the brain, genetics, institutional differences, societal influences and peer influences (Knox Schacht, 2008). I believe that the way my parents raised I and my siblings were based off of the way they were raised. My mother came from a strict home with her father being a cop and her mother being a school teacher, she also had three other siblings. Since my mom was brought up in a strict environment, she reversed her parenting to being a laid back mom. My dad was the opposite; he came from a laid back family, now my dad is the opposite in being very strict towards us. My family is somewhat what you would call a blended family. My dad was married once before my mom and had one daughter, which was way before my sister, my brother and I. So I have a step sister, and she has a step mother. Getting Older Divorce I have never experienced any sort of divorce except from my friendââ¬â¢s point of view. Iââ¬â¢m one of the lucky ones whose parents have stayed married, and not for the wrong reasons. From seeing some of my closest friends go through divorces, Iââ¬â¢m glad I have never gone through it. My friends had blamed the divorce on themselves, instead of seeing that it had nothing to do with them. There are many factors that make up a divorce, and one of them is not the children. Today in American 40%-50% of all marriages end in divorce (Knox Schacht, 2008). Sometimes is not because they want to, itââ¬â¢s because they have to. More divorces are brought on because the spouse cheats on the other, or itââ¬â¢s because they are in an abusive relationship. Violence, Abuse, Neglect The Abusive Behavior inventory reveled that I was not in an abusive relationship, which I already knew, and trust me if I was, I would have left a long time ago. Relationship violence is a pattern of behavior in which one partner uses fear and intimidation to establish power and control over the other partner, often including the threat or use of violence. This abuse happens when one person believes they are entitled to control anotherâ⬠(Meggs ,Margaret L. 2003). I am a walking example of that, being physically and emotionally abused in my last relationship. I didnââ¬â¢t think I would be a ble to get out of that relationship, so I ended up staying for two years until I finally got the courage to leave him. It was hard but it had to be done. Although I have been a victim of abuse, Iââ¬â¢ve never been neglected. Most neglect happens in younger children and elderly people, since they are the easiest to neglect and the most attention needed. Luckily I have never seen or been around anyone that has been neglected. Stress and Older Age Stress comes into play a lot whether youââ¬â¢re at an older age or not. Iââ¬â¢m only 18 and I experience more stress than I should, from going to school full time and working full time. There are a lot of things that I try to relieve my stress such as exercise, or snuggling on the couch and reading a good book. With older age, comes more stress if youââ¬â¢re not careful. There has been an increase in grandparents parenting their grandchildren due to the alternative lifestyles that we have now today. There are gender differences in views of marriage and dealing with losses, when we talk about older age. Older aged men view marriage as idealistic while older aged women view marriage as more realistic with disagreements (Knox Schacht, 2008). Summary There has been a great deal of knowledge that I have taken in throughout this course, from marriage to getting older and being a grandparent. Marriage is not as simple as every one takes it out to be, and thatââ¬â¢s the major thing I learned in this course. A family is hard to keep together if you donââ¬â¢t try to make it work, and there are just little things that can affect a marriage or a family. Bibliography ReSPONSE, Meggs ,Margaret L. (2003).
